We help our clients with all sorts of algae. Green Algae is the most common trend among pool owners. It is pesky, yucky and a pain. Keep your pool looking fresh all year round and defeat that green with these tips:
First, know your enemy
Your typical green pool algae, flourishes in sunlight and water. Sounds like a bad combination for a pool… According to the California Department of Public Health,
“Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) are any of a number of species of microscopic bacteria that are photosynthetic. They may exist as single cells or groups of cells. They occur naturally in surface waters. When conditions are optimal, including light and temperature, levels of nutrients (i.e., phosphorous and nitrogen, and the ratio of the two), and lack of water turbulence, blue-green algae can quickly multiply into a bloom.”
The Department also states that blue-green algae can also cause skin irritation, rashes, allergic reactions and other effects.
The Houston Department of Health will actually fine you if your pool is green because it can breed harmful mosquitoes.
