With the recent news about Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have fielded several questions about the virus and swimming pools/hot tubs. Following is a statement from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control):According to the CDC, there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.

Fall for pools means…getting ready for winterizing!

I can practically smell fall!  It might be 90 degrees today down South, but I can still smell a hint of fall in the air! Pumpkins and firewood are out at the store.  Apples are abundant, potatoes, squash and lots of other yummy fall food! I have begun enjoying nightly teas and cuddling up on the sofa. Our windows were open with the inside A/C off for three whole days! Yay!

Fall for pools means…getting ready for winterizing, taking one last dip in the pool only to come out shivering like a polar bear (do polar bears shiver?) and scooping out all those leaves!

Our pool technician, Robert shares some of his handy dandy tips on winterizing your pool!  He is the master at this stuff!  (Video coming soon)

*These recommended steps are for southern areas only where there is little to no chance of pool surfaces freezing

Robert says…

Step One: Clean your pool

  • Take out all the leaves by netting them
  • Empty all the skimmer baskets and cleaner bag
  • Brush the sides of your pool with your long-handled pool brush
  • Vacuum the bottom of your pool
  • Check and balance water chemistry- we recommend this test kit

Step Two: Shut power off to equipment pad

  • Locate your main power switch and turn it off
  • Locate your house breaker box and find the label marked “pool” and turn it off as well

Step Three: Empty water from the equipment pad

  • Find drain plug on your filter and open it up (this is a good opportunity to complete a filter breakdown)
  • Allow all the water to drain out of your filter
  • Find drain plug(s) on your water pump(s)
  • Allow all the water to drain out of these as well

Step Four: Install a pool cover if wanted

  • Follow manufactures pool cover install instructions
  • Review of pool covers coming soon!

Step Five: Sustaining through the winter

  • If you have a salt cell or inline chlorine feeder they will no longer operate with the equipment off-in this case add a chlorine floater to your pool
  • Check your water chemistry every two weeks and balance accordingly

*Note: All of these steps are for pools with equipment pads above the water level of the pool (yes, I have dealt with pools that have their equipment pads lover than the water level of the pool…no fun)
