With the recent news about Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have fielded several questions about the virus and swimming pools/hot tubs. Following is a statement from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control):According to the CDC, there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.

Defeat the Green

We help our clients with all sorts of algae.  Green Algae is the most common trend among pool owners.  It is pesky, yucky and a pain.  Keep your pool looking fresh all year round and defeat that green with these tips:

First,  know your enemy

Your typical green pool algae, flourishes in sunlight and water. Sounds like a bad combination for a pool… According to the California Department of Public Health,

“Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) are any of a number of species of microscopic bacteria that are photosynthetic.  They may exist as single cells or groups of cells. They occur naturally in surface waters.  When conditions are optimal, including light and temperature, levels of nutrients (i.e., phosphorous and nitrogen, and the ratio of the two), and lack of water turbulence, blue-green algae can quickly multiply into a bloom.”

The Department also states that blue-green algae can also cause skin irritation, rashes, allergic reactions and other effects.

The Houston Department of Health will actually fine you if your pool is green because it can breed harmful mosquitoes.

It’s Alive!

The first step in defeating the green is as I always say, GOOD FILTRATION!

Plan the Attack

It’s best to attack the algae fast!

  • Check to make sure you have good filtration.
  • Make sure your pressure has not gone over 15 PSI since your last cleaning.
  • Check your chemistry, making sure that you have a good chlorine reading of at least 2ppm.
  • Check that your other common chemicals are reading at good levels as well.
  • Next brush all surfaces of your pool to release the algae from the walls.
  • Then you need to hit it with a heavy dose of granular chlorine. Your best option is to then add a algaecide (algae killer).
  • Let the pool run overnight or until the algae is no longer present.
  • Keep brushing the pool!
  • After this step all you will be left with is dead algae dust. You can then victoriously vacuum it from the pool.

Note: It’s a good idea to clean you filter after the presence of algae. We do filter breakdowns at the cost of a car detailing…no one wants to touch that nasty thing except us!
